Modeling the Economics of Greenhouse Gas Mitigation : Summary of a Workshop

Description

Models are fundamental for estimating the possible costs and effectiveness of different policies for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. There is a wide array of models to perform such analysis, differing in the level of technological detail, treatment of technological progress, spatial and sector details, and representation of the interaction of the energy sector to the overall economy and environment. These differences impact model results, including cost estimates. More fundamentally, these models differ as to how they represent fundamental processes that have a large impact on policy analysis--such as how different models represent technological learning and cost reductions that come through increasing production volumes, or how different models represent baseline conditions. Reliable estimates of the costs and potential impacts on the United States economy of various emissions reduction and other mitigation strategies are critical to the development of the federal climate change research and development portfolio. At the request of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the National Academies organized a workshop, summarized in this volume, to consider some of these types of modeling issues.

Perishable Material Culture in Prehistory : Investigating the Missing Majority

Description

Perishable Material Culture in Prehistory provides new approaches and integrates a broad range of data to address a neglected topic, organic material in the prehistoric record. Providing news ideas and connections and suggesting revisionist ways of thinking about broad themes in the past, this book demonstrates the efficacy of an holistic approach by using examples and cases studies. No other book covers such a broad range of organic materials from a social and object biography perspective, or concentrates so fully on approaches to the missing components of prehistoric material culture. This book will be an essential addition for those people wishing to understand better the nature and importance of organic materials as the 'missing majority' of prehistoric material culture.

Crochet Workshop: Learn How to Crochet with 20 Inspiring Projects

Description

Crochet Workshop is the perfect book for the beginner. Under Erika Knight's guidance even those who have never picked up a crochet hook before will soon be making gorgeous projects and all the while learning new techniques and adding to their skills. Each of the 20 projects in the book will teach you a new stitch, technique or trick, and will build on and consolidate crochet techniques already learnt in the preceding projects, until you have mastered a wide repertoire of skills and completed an enviable collection of gorgeous crocheted items. With Erika's stunning designs, crochet is no longer the kitsch retro craft that saw the endless crocheted bikinis and shawls of the seventies. Crochet Workshop showcases the incredible variety of finishes that different crochet techniques can produce. Erika begins with simple scarves and hats that are chic accessories as well as being the perfect items to practise basic stitches. She then takes you through the dense textures of double and treble crochet - which make excellent bags, purses and even a laptop case - and then moves on to the more intricate, delicate lace stitches - perfect for heirloom shawls and antique-style cushions. Freeform or random crochet takes the craft to a more demanding level and projects like the edge-to-edge cardigan will provide a new challenge for all creative crocheters. With exquisite photography by Yuki Sugiura that perfectly shows each of the beautiful designs, and supported with clear charts and artworks, Erika Knight has created the ultimate book for new enthusiasts of this remarkable craft.

In the tradition of "The Power of Habit "and" Thinking, Fast and Slow" comes a practical, playful, and endlessly fascinating guide to what we really know about learning and memory today and how we can apply it to our own lives. This innovative and lively book is quite unlike any other introduction to postcolonialism. Robert Young examines the political, social, and cultural after-effects of decolonization by presenting situations, experiences, and testimony rather than going through the theory at an abstract level. He situates the debate in a wide cultural context, discussing its importance as an historical condition, with examples such as the status of aboriginal people, of those dispossessed from their land, Algerian rai music, postcolonial feminism, and global social and ecological movements. Above all, Young argues, postcolonialism offers a political philosophy of activism that contests the current situation of global inequality, and so in a new way continues the anti-colonial struggles of the past. The peaceful monastery of St Alcuin's is adjusting to its new abbot, who is taking the place of Father Peregrine, when an old enemy arrives seeking refuge. Reluctantly taking in Prior William, the upended community must address old fears and bitterness while warily seeking reconciliation. But can they really trust Prior William? In her fourth book in the series, Penelope Wilcock wrestles with the difficulties of forgiveness and the cautions of building trust. What is truly the hardest thing to do?

Selene is convinced that love and friendship can only bring her pain. Forensic pathologist Eve Thomas is well-acquainted with the pain of romantic love. Swearing off relationships after having her heart broken by a cheating ex, Eve throws herself into her work: catching murderers. When Selene comes to her aid after an attack by a masked man in Golden Gate Park, Eve is shocked by how powerfully she is drawn to her mysterious savior. Shaken by her own feelings for Eve, Selene is even more terrified to realize she isn t even close to being the scariest monster stalking San Francisco. Robert Sardello,Rudolf Steiner,M. Spock: A Psychology of Body, Soul and Spirit

A Psychology of Body, Soul and Spirit

Description

12 lectures, Berlin, October 23, 1909-December 16, 1911 (CW 115)In 1904, Steiner publicly described this classic account of the Western path of initiation. Beginning with the assumption that "the capacities by which we can gain insights into the higher worlds lie dormant within each one of us," Steiner carefully and precisely leads us through the stages of preparation, illumination, and initiation, from cultivating fundamental soul moods of reverence and tranquility to esoteric self-development. He also provides practical exercises for inner and outer observation and moral development. By patiently and persistently following his suggestions, new capacities of soul and spirit begin to form, revealing the contours of the higher worlds previously concealed from us.Robert Sardello s in-depth introduction places Steiner s lectures within the context of modern life and psychology and provides insights into how to read and use this text for inner development and a deeper understanding of spiritual science. The challenges we face in modern life require ever-deeper levels of wisdom and insight. In this important book, Rudolf Steiner becomes a teacher, counselor, and friend through advice that is practical, clear, and powerful. The text shows us how to cultivate the capacities for such insights and places them at the service of humanity. Contents: Introduction by Robert Sardello Part 1 "Anthroposophy" The Human being and the Senses Supersensible Processes in the Human Senses The Higher Senses, inner Forces, and Creative Principles in the Human Organism Supersensible Currents, Group Soul, and the I in Human Beings and Animals Part 2 "Psychosophy" Aspects of Soul Life The Activities of Human Soul Forces The Senses, Feeling, and Aesthetic Judging Consciousness and Soul Life Part 3 "Pneumatosophy" Franz Brentano and Aristotle s Doctrine of the Spirit Truth and Error in Light of the Spiritual World "Imagination" Imagination; "Inspiration" Self-Fulfillment; "Intuition" Conscience Nature, the Evolution of Consciousness, and Reincarnation Steiner does not talk "about" soul; he speaks "from" soul. That is the entire method. There is, however, an entrance fee for doing psychology. The fee is that you need to leave behind your well-known-to-you self-identity. You must suffer the experience of leaving behind not only what you know, but also what you "think" you know of yourself. This requirement qualifies psychology as integral to the work of initiation. Robert Sardello, from his introduction Essentially, the correct meaning of "theosophy" is the allowing of the god within us to speak; what it tells you about the world is theosophy. Anthroposophy, for its part, may be characterized as the wisdom spoken by us as human beings when we are between God and nature, and allow the human being in us to speak of what is shining into us from above and of what is projecting into us from below. "Anthroposophy" is the wisdom that human beings speak. Rudolf SteinerA previous translation of these lectures were published as "Anthroposophy, Psychosophy, Pneumatosophy" and as "Wisdom of Man, of the Soul, and of the Spirit." This volume is a translation from German of "Anthroposophie, Psychosophie, Pneumatosophie" (GA 115)"

Victor Serge,Richard Greeman: Conquered City

Conquered City

Description

1919-1920: St. Petersburg, city of the czars, has fallen to the Revolution. Camped out in the splendid palaces of the former regime, the city's new masters seek to cement their control, even as the counterrevolutionary White Army regroups. "Conquered City," Victor Serge's most unrelenting narrative, is structured like a detective story, one in which the new political regime tracks down and eliminates its enemies--the spies, speculators, and traitors hidden among the mass of common people. "Conquered City" is about terror: the Red Terror and the White Terror. But mainly about the Red, the Communists who have dared to pick up the weapons of power--police, guns, jails, spies, treachery--in the doomed gamble that by wielding them righteously, they can put an end to the need for terror, perhaps forever. Conquered City is their tragedy and testament.

Through the powerful, tested techniques they clearly outline, Gillian Butler and Tony Hope will teach you to: * Build self-confidence * Overcome anxiety and depression * Take control of your present and future * Establish and maintain fulfilling relationships with family, friends, and co-workers * Free yourself from fears and persistent worries * Break bad habits Conquered City download epub * Relieve stress * Develop your full potential * Manage your self and your time * Clarify your goals and values Manage Your Mind also includes specific, up-to-date information on how to make decisions, strengthen your memory, stop smoking, sleep better, recover from alcohol abuse, and more. Feeling good is not just a question of addressing a few problems but depends on the development of positive attitudes and skills that can help you to make the most of your opportunities. 'Manage Your Mind' is a remarkable guide which will help you to lead a more enjoyable and productive life.

Carle C. Zimmerman,James Kurth: Family and Civilization

Family and Civilization

Description

"Family and Civilization" is the magnum opus of Carle Zimmerman, a distinguished sociologist who taught for many years at Harvard University. In this unjustly forgotten work Zimmerman demonstrates the close and causal connections between the rise and fall of different types of families and the rise and fall of civilizations, particularly ancient Greece and Rome, medieval and modern Europe, and the United States. Zimmerman traces the evolution of family structure from tribes and clans to extended and large nuclear families to the small nuclear families and broken families of today. And he shows the consequences of each structure for the bearing and rearing of children; for religion, law, and everyday life; and for the fate of civilization itself.Originally published in 1947, this compelling analysis predicted many of today s cultural and social controversies and trends, including youth violence and depression, abortion and homosexuality, the demographic collapse of Europe and of the West more generally, and the displacement of peoples. This new edition, part of ISI Books Background series, has been edited and abridged by cultural commentator James Kurth of Swarthmore College and includes essays on the text by Kurth, Allan Carlson, and Bryce Christensen."
